ARTIST STATEMENT

In my work, I deconstruct the formal aspects of depicting a landscape and the views of what art is or can be. My work is produced by arranging familiar visual objects. Often times these themes are combined into installations that feature mundane household materials, children’s toys and other mass produced things.
The final aesthetic of each piece tends to be organic in form; rounded amorphous objects, often in groupings. Sometimes my pieces take on an autonomic role growing from the ground. I am interested in making organic forms from everyday functional objects. The exploration and transformation of non-tradition materials subverts these everyday objects the viewer already has a connection with.
By using non-traditional materials I rely on our desires for beauty and our curiosity to seduce the view into interacting with the work. I feel my installations remain unfinished inventories of fragments unless the viewer moves into a space of speculation and interaction with the piece. This interaction and realization formally unifies the disparate objects in each
I like to mix different materials together along with different colors and textures. I like the overall aesthetic achieved through the conflict and/or harmony of these different materials together be it natural or industrial materials used.
The process of gathering, associating, patterning and making the work is as important and has as much relevance as the final piece. The realization of one piece is the beginning of the development of the next piece, each one linked to the last and the next.
